Tamang contested from two constituencies in the recently concluded state assembly elections and won both the seats by a margin of over 7,000 votes.

His party Sikkim Krantikari Morcha won the elections by winning 31 out of total 32 assembly seats in the state.

"I apologize to the people of 07-Soreng-Chakung constituency as I have decided to step aside to allow an honest and loyal party functionary to serve you as your MLA," the chief minister said.

According to the Conduct of Elections Rules 1961, under Section 67/A, he has to resign from one of the two constituencies within 14 days of the declaration of the election results.

Tamang was born in Soreng-Chakung constituency and his mother still lives in their home.

“I sincerely congratulate and thank the people of 07-Soreng-Chakung Constituency for your affinity, unity, duty consciousness, perseverance, tenacity, dedication and sacrifice. Your contribution has been invaluable, and I am eternally grateful to you all "I promise to stay." You,” he added.

Notably, Chief Minister's wife Krishna Kumari Rai, who won from Namchi-Singithang assembly constituency in Sikkim, resigned from the post of MLA a day after taking oath as MLA.

Tamang said that his wife has left the legislature as per the party's unilateral decision.
