The National Council, the lower house of Switzerland's parliament, voted on Wednesday in favor of increasing tuition fees.

The proposal would mean that people who move to Switzerland to study will have to pay at least three times more in future than people already living in Switzerland.

Currently Swiss citizens and foreigners pay the same amount on ETH and EPF, less than €1,500 ($1,625) per year. The upper house of Parliament has still not agreed on the duty increase.

Parliament members argued that Swiss students at renowned foreign universities have to pay up to 40 times more than domestic students. Another argument is that educational institutions are funded by taxpayers' money which is raised only from people living in Switzerland.
