Pune, NCP (SP) President Sharad Pawar on Monday recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2016 statement in which he had talked about coming into politics by holding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's finger and expressed surprise at the Prime Minister's now adopting a different stand. .

Speaking at a rally in Baramati Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra's Pun district ahead of the parliamentary elections, Pawar also took a dig at PM Modi for "personal attacks" and action against people with different ideologies.

He said, "When I was the Union Agriculture Minister, I helped Gujarat tremendously, when Modi was the CM of the state. I did not look at which party he belonged to. I saw the need to please the farmer in his state. And so I helped him." Said.

"One day he told me that he wanted to come to Baramati. In his speech he said that Pawar saheb had held my finger and taught me to do whatever (developmental) work I have done so far. But today he was a "Taking a different approach." The NCP (SP) chief said.If anyone makes personal criticism or takes a different stand, he is put in jail, Pawar said and cited the cases of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

He said, "Is this democracy? No, this is dictatorship."

Pawar said, "If power goes into the hands of one person then it becomes corrupt. If power is in the hands of more people then it cannot go on the wrong path."

Referring to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's recent comment that the Baramati fight is not between Pawar versus Pawar but between PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi, the NCP (SP) chief quipped whether the Congress leader was coming to Baramati to seek votes. ."Are they coming here to ask for votes? Is Modi coming here? This is a new thing now. They are not talking about voting for Maharashtra; they are talking about Modi or Gandhi. For me, this election is about seeing how collective power the voters here can pave the way for good work at the national level, he said.

Talking about his nephew and Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar's decision to join hands with the BJP, he said some people took the extreme step and asked who inspired him to do so.

He said, “Today BJP is not a party that cares about the common people and farmers in rural areas. The party is owned by a handful of people, so the common voters did not vote (for the Ajit Pawar-led NCP) to go with the BJP," he said.

The former Union minister said, in the last state assembly elections, the people of Baramati voted wholeheartedly and the vote was in the name of the (then undivided) NCP.

He said, "Today, some people have forgotten that fact and are going on a different path, I think this is the wrong path, one should stop going on that path and people should come on the right path "

Sharad Pawar, while advocating for his daughter and sitting Baramati MP Supriya Sule, who is the NCP (SP) candidate from the seat, said there is no need to tell him about the candidate as Parliament speaks about him. ."Supriya's name is among the three MPs who have done excellent work with 90 per cent attendance. Till now no one has made a single allegation against her. I have nominated her to represent you in Parliament. I Want to ask you to vote for the new symbol (of his party after the split in NCP) 'the man flying the tuatari', which has reached the grassroots level in the constituency,'' he said.

In Baramati, Sule is contesting against Ajit Pawar's wife and NCP candidate Sunetra Pawar.Elections for 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra will be held in five phases from April 19 to May 20.

Voting will be held in Baramati on 7th May.
