Chennai: India's flamboyant opening batsman Shafali Verma scored the fastest double century in the history of women's Test cricket, surpassing Australia's Annabel Sutherland during the one-off Test against South Africa here on Friday.

The 20-year-old Shafali scored her double century in just 194 balls, bettering the feat of Sutherland, who scored a century in 248 balls against South Africa earlier this year.

Shafali also became the second Indian after former captain Mithali Raj to score a double century in Test cricket after a long time of almost 22 years.

Mithali had scored 214 runs off 407 balls and the former India captain had achieved this during the drawn second Test against England at Taunton in August, 2022.

Shafali hit 23 fours and eight sixes during her aggressive innings.

He completed his double century with consecutive sixes off off-spinner Delmy Tucker and then took a single.

Shafali was eventually run out after scoring 205 runs in 197 balls.

Apart from this, her opening partner Smriti Mandhana also played an aggressive innings of 149 runs in 161 balls with the help of 27 fours and one six and made a tremendous opening partnership of 292 runs, which was made in just 52 overs.

India are performing brilliantly against South Africa on the first day and are scoring close to a run-a-ball.
