Alappuzha (Kerala), The CPI, an ally of the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala, on Thursday slammed the student group SFI, saying if its practices are not corrected, it will become a liability to the Left front in the state. .

The criticism came from CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam, who told reporters here that the methods of the CPI(M) student wing, the Students Federation of India (SFI), "are not those of the student movement of left".

"The SFI activists and comrades should read about the history of the student movement. They are not aware of their origins and what they represent. The new SFI does not know the meaning of the term Left Front. They do not know the depth of its political ideology.

"They also do not know the obligations of the Left Front in the new world. They must be taught about all this. If they are not taught, if they are not corrected, the SFI will become a liability for the Left Front. It should not happen" Viswam said.

Reportedly, he was speaking regarding the SFI's recent activities, including allegedly slapping a college principal and beating up a KSU leader on the Kerala University campus, which have been in the news.

Viswam's severe criticism came hours after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan defended the SFI's activities in the state Assembly.

Vijayan defended the SFI after the Congress-led opposition UDF accused the Left student outfit of engaging in criminal activities on state campuses.

Viswam also said that there are thousands of youth in the SFI and keeping them in mind too, the student team needs to be guided on the right path.

"They (SFI) should become the force of the left front. For this, they must be made aware that the forms they have adopted now are not correct," said the CPI state secretary.
