New Delhi: A massive fire broke out at a private children's hospital in East Delhi's Vivek Vihar, killing seven newborns. Officials gave this information on Sunday.

Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said the fire broke out at Baby Care New Born Hospital around 11:30 pm on Saturday and soon spread to two other buildings nearby.

Division fire officer Rajendra Atwal said 16 fire tenders were deployed to control the fire.

He said that the oxygen cylinders kept in the two-storey building exploded, due to which the surrounding buildings were damaged.Another fire official said two boutiques, a part of IndusInd Bank operating from an adjacent building and a shop on the ground floor were also damaged, besides an ambulance and a scooter parked outside the building.

President Draupadi Murmu expressed grief over the death of the children and prayed for strength to the bereaved parents.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that those responsible for negligence will not be spared.

Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj also said that those found negligent or involved in any wrongdoing will be given the harshest punishment.

In a post on Twitter, Kejriwal said the government stands with those who lost their children in the fire incident, and said the administration is ensuring proper treatment to the injured.He said that the cause of the fire is being investigated and those who are negligent will not be spared.

DFS chief Atul Garg said 12 newborns were rescued from the medical facility, but seven of them died.

He said five children were being treated at another hospital, some of them with minor burns.

Police said the bodies have been sent to GTB Hospital for postmortem.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary said hospital owner Naveen Kichi was booked under sections 336 (act endangering personal safety of others) and 304A (causing death by negligence) at Vive Vihar police station. Is.The officer said teams have been formed to nab the owner.

Chaudhary said that they are checking the fire NOC of the hospital and if found so, IPC sections can be added.

According to eyewitnesses, local people and members of an NGO, Shaheed Seva Dal, were the first to come forward to help.

Some residents climbed the building from the back and rescued some newborn babies. An eyewitness said members of Shaheed Seva Dal, an NGO active in the area, were also involved in the rescue efforts.Local resident Ravi Gupta said that some local people climbed from behind the building and took out the children one by one.

Sanju Verma, another resident, said that fire department officials, local police and service team members joined the rescue operation.

A member of the service team claimed that the hospital staff fled immediately after the fire broke out in the hospital building.

Another resident, Mukesh Bansal, claimed that 'unauthorised' work of refilling oxygen cylinders was being done in the building.

Bansal alleged, “We had also complained about this to the local councilor.But nothing was done. All this was happening right under the nose of the police."

Bansal also said that he used to live next to the hospital but due to the 'illegal' work of cylinder refilling, he moved to the next street.
