The accident occurred on a road in El Hadjira in Tougourt province, about 600 kilometers south-east of the capital Algiers. The collision caused the bus to catch fire, killing three women, two men and two children.

The bodies of the victims were taken to a nearby hospital, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to official reports, more than 90 percent of traffic accidents in this North African country over the past decade have been caused by human error, mainly non-compliance with traffic laws. Poor road and vehicle conditions have been cited as contributing factors to some extent.
