According to a BSF statement, one of the Border Security Force personnel deployed at border post Kalamcherra opened fire on the smugglers "in self-defence sensing imminent danger to life and government property".

The deceased has been reliably identified as Anwar Hossain, 35, resident of Mirpur, Comilla district of Bangladesh.

"On June 9, 2024, at about 0730 hours, BSF troops, while occupying the area of ​​BOP Kalamcherra, observed a large group of smugglers, armed with sharp edged weapons, on both sides of the border fence, crossing the International Border. They were trying to smuggle goods across, the BSF statement said."When challenged to stop, the smugglers paid no attention and became aggressive and tried to surround the BSF jawan on duty with the intention of attacking him and snatching his personal weapon with imminent threat to life and government property." Sensing the danger, the BSF jawan fired 1 round from the PAG in self-defence," the BSF statement said.

It further said that the use of non-lethal weapons further emboldened the smugglers and they continued their aggressive actions.

“A brief scuffle ensued, during which Constable Rajeev Kumar, sensing threat to his life and weapon, was forced to fire one round from his INSAS rifle.As a result a Bangladeshi smuggler was killed close to the border fence and about 150 yards inside the Indian border. Area,” BSF said.

Subsequently, the BSF said, a thorough search of the area was conducted and a huge quantity of sugar, four knives and wooden planks were recovered from the incident site.

BSF also said that a similar incident had taken place on June 2 in the same area where the same Bangladeshi smugglers brutally assaulted a BSF constable, attempted to drag him towards Bangladesh and stole his personal weapon (PAG) and The radio set was also snatched.
