Mumbai: Equity benchmark indices started trading on an optimistic note on Wednesday, amid heavy buying in bank stocks and strong global market trends, with Sensex crossing the historic 80,000-mark for the first time and Nifty at its new lifetime high. Has reached.

The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 597.77 points to hit a new high of 80,039.22. Nifty rose 168.3 points to reach a new record peak of 24,292.15.

HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finance, IndusInd Bank, Bharti Airtel and Nestle were the top gainers in the Sensex pack.

Tata Consultancy Services, Sun Pharma, Infosys and Tata Motors were among the laggards.

In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong were trading in positive territory while Shanghai was quoted lower.

American markets closed with gains on Tuesday.

The BSE benchmark closed 34.74 points or 0.04 per cent lower at 79,441.45 in volatile trade on Tuesday. During the day it jumped 379.68 points or 0.47 percent to hit a record high of 79,855.87.

Nifty fell by 18.10 points or 0.07 percent to 24,123.85. It rose 94.4 points or 0.39 per cent to an intra-day high of 24,236.35.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.56 percent to US$86.72 per barrel.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 2,000.12 crore on Tuesday.
