Mumbai: Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty gained strength on Friday due to rise in market giants Reliance Industries, ITC and Bharat Airtel amid supportive trend in foreign markets.

Recovering from a sharp fall in the previous trade, the 30-share BSE Sense closed 260.30 points or 0.36 per cent higher at 72,664.47. During the day it rose 542.37 points or 0.74 percent to 72,946.54.

NSE Nifty rose 97.70 points or 0.44 per cent to 22,055.20.

Power Grid, NTPC, JSW Steel, Asian Paints, ITC, Bharat Airtel, Hindustan Unilever and Tata Motors were the top gainers in the Sensex.

On the other hand, Tata Consultancy Services, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Infosys Wipro, Mahindra & Mahindra and HDFC Bank were among the laggards.

Among Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong closed with gains.

European markets were trading in the green. Wall Street ended Thursday in positive territory.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.41 percent to US$84.22 per barrel.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 6,994.8 crore on Thursday.

In the previous session, the BSE benchmark fell 1,062.22 points or 1.45 per cent to close at 72,404.17 on Thursday. The NSE Nifty dived 345 points or 1.5 per cent to 21,957.50.
