Midcap and smallcap stocks outperformed largecaps. Nifty Midcap closed at 53,666, up 430 points or 0.81 per cent and Nifty Smallcap 100 closed at 17,571, up 96 points or 0.55 per cent.

Among sector indices, Auto, IT, PSU Bank, Realty and Energy were the major gainers. Fin Services, FMCG and Pharma were the major laggards.

L&T, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, NTPC, UltraTech Cement, Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, M&M, Bajaj Finance, HCL Tech and Power Grid were among the top gainers. Kotak Mahindra, Asian Paints, Reliance, ITC, Sun Pharma and ICICI Bank were the top losers.

Rupak Dey, Senior Technical Analyst, LKP Securities, said, "Nifty remained sideways during the day as there was no directional move. The sentiment may remain sideways till it moves out of the 23,150 - 23,350 range. Neither side. A decisive breakout could confirm the future direction of the market."

"On the higher side, above 23,350, it may move towards 23,600. Meanwhile, below 23,150 support is placed at 23,000 - 22,900," he said.
