Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant has claimed that the central government did not allow MTNL and BSNL to start 4G/5G services, causing huge losses to customers.

In a post on X, he tagged a letter dated May 21, 2024 from Neeraj Mittal of the Ministry of Communications, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications, Secretaries of all Central Government Departments and Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories on monetization of surplus land . and creation of assets of both the PSUs.

"The Union Cabinet in 2019 approved the revival plan of BSNL/MTNL, including monetization of its surplus land/building assets. BSNL's assets are spread across the country and MTNL's properties are located in Mumbai and Delhi, Most of the properties are in prime locations. “The properties are offered through direct sales to government departments, PSUs and government organisations,” the letter said.

Sawant, MP from Mumbai South, questioned the timing of the letter when the Model Code of Conduct is still in force in the country in view of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Sena (UBT leader) claimed, “Why should he (secretary) not be questioned as to what he was doing since 2019. I am nothing but strangulating and sabotaging BSNL and MTNL.”

"In the name of self-reliance, they did not allow BSNL/MTNL to start 4G/5 services, causing loss of customers and huge losses," he alleged.
