Despite the acquittal, Ram Rahim, who is currently lodged in Sunaria jail in Rohtak, Haryana, will remain in jail as he has also been convicted in other cases of rape and murder.

A bench of Justice Sureshwar Thakur and Justice Lalit Batra delivered the verdict on the appeal filed by Ram Rahim and others, convicted by the CB court of Panchkula in 2021.

The others are Avtar Singh, Jasbir Singh, Sabdil Singh and Krishna Lal, all of whom were sentenced to life imprisonment along with the self-styled godman.

Former Dera manager Ranjit Singh was shot dead by four assailants on 10 July 2002 in Khanpur Kolian village of Kurukshetra, Haryana.

In 2021, a special CBI court found Ram Rahim and others guilty of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

Suspecting that Ranjit Singh was murdered because of his alleged role, I circulated a letter detailing how the Dera chief was sexually exploiting women at the Dera headquarters in Sirsa.

Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati later used the same letter in a news report. He was assassinated soon after the report was published.

Ram Rahim was also convicted for the murder of a journalist.

Accepting his appeal in December 2021, the High Court had stayed the recovery of 50 percent of the fine during the pendency of the appeal.
