Addressing a press conference at Vidhana Soudha, Minister MB Patil pointed out that a land parcel of between 4,500 and 5,000 acres would be needed for the proposed airport.

A high-level committee will make the appropriate decision, taking into account various factors, he added.

"Currently, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport, which is the third busiest airport in the country after Mumbai and Delhi, has an annual capacity to handle 52 million passengers and 0.71 million tonnes of cargo. Further expansions could optimize these figures up to 110 million passengers. and the airport is expected to reach its maximum handling capacity in 2035, both in terms of passengers and cargo, from then on there will be no possibility of continuing to build runways, since it already has two," he explained. .

Regarding the Tamil Nadu government's decision to build an airport at Hosur following the start of talks by Karnataka for a second airport for Bengaluru, Patil opined that his decision would not affect Karnataka.

"According to the rules, before making a decision on the location of the airport, we must consider ecological factors.

“In addition, connectivity, such as highways, trains and subways, must also be taken into account. There is also a need to deliberate on the aspects of passenger loading and facilitation of industrial growth," Patil explained.

The minister stated that the government now has some options regarding probable sites such as Kanakapura Road, Mysuru Road, Magadi, Doddaballapura, Dabaspet and Tumakuru.

The exclusivity clause with BIAL, which restricts the construction of another airport within a 150-kilometer radius, ends in 2033.

“If we start the process now, we can have the second airport ready by then,” he said.

"Cities like Mumbai and Delhi have their second airports at a distance of 35 to 40 kilometers, and we will also consider this. Overall, the decision will be taken to facilitate growth and improve the liveability of Bengaluru," the minister said.

Patil also mentioned that he had a telephonic conversation with Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy regarding the industrial development of the state.

"We will soon meet Kumaraswamy personally and submit a proposal to him. The State will extend its full cooperation to those who have expressed interest in bringing big industries to the State, including semiconductor manufacturing units," he added.
