Ernakulam (Kerala) [India], Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly VD Satheesan on Saturday accused the state's Left government of doing nothing to check sea erosion, which is affecting lives and media of subsistence of fishing communities in the state.

"During monsoon and all other seasons, aggressive sea erosion takes place in the state. Many houses have been lost and people are in trouble," Satheesan told ANI in the coastal village of Edavanakad in Ernakulam, where several houses are being destroyed. are affected due to marine erosion. .

Congress MP Hibi Eden accompanied Satheesan during the latter's visit to the village.

Their only means of livelihood is fishing; they are leaving the place. Unfortunately, The government is not doing anything," Satheesan said.

The Congress leader alleged that the state government had made numerous promises to the people of the coastal area, but all of them remained only on paper.

"The state government has to protect the coastal areas from marine erosion. The Kerala Fisheries Minister has made many promises to the people living in the coastal areas but nothing has happened. The packages for coastal areas announced in the budgets previous ones have not been implemented, without spending a single rupee to contain sea erosion.

Satheesan said the Arabian Sea has become increasingly turbulent and the fishing community is suffering.

"Maybe due to climate change or other reasons, the Arabian Sea is very turbulent and the fishing community is suffering too much. They cannot move to live in another area, since fishing is their livelihood. We have to give protection to the people who live in coastal areas, unfortunately the state government is not doing anything," he said.

He said Eden received a response in Parliament from the central government that there was no project brought forward by the state government to contain marine erosion.

"Our MP (Hibi Eden) received a reply in Parliament from the central government that there is no pending project brought forward by the state government. That is very surprising because we need financial help from the central government."
