A no-confidence motion against the Labor Party-led Scottish government was defeated in the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood on Wednesday by 70 votes to 58, Xinhua news agency reported.

The vote was unlikely to pass without the support of the Scottish Green Party after the First Minister was confirmed to be stepping down.

Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Joseph announced his resignation on Monday.

He has been under intense pressure after ending a power-sharing deal with the Scottish Green Party last week.

Youssef admitted that he had underestimated the level of grief and disappointment caused by his decision to break ties with the Greens.

He immediately called for a leadership contest to find his replacement. Yusa will continue to serve as First Minister until a new leader is appointed.

Under Scottish law, members of the Scottish Parliament have 28 days to choose a replacement.
