Thiruvananthapuram: Over 2.44 lakh students enrolled in Class 1 across Kerala as the new academic year began in the state on Monday after two-month summer vacations.

State education department officials here said a total of 39,94,944 students will be enrolled in the new academic year, including 1,34,763 children in pre-primary, 11,59,652 in lower primary and 12,09,882 in high school.

He said the total number of new admissions in Class 1 was 2,44,646.

Teachers in various institutions across the state could be seen welcoming new students by decorating schools and classrooms with colorful baubles and glitter.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the state-level entrance festival named "Praveshotsavam" at the Government Higher Secondary School at Elamakkara in Ernakulam district in the morning.

Vijayan, in his inaugural address, said that classrooms in government schools have become high-tech, and they provide immense opportunities for entertainment and learning. He wished that the students would utilize these facilities and opportunities to achieve their goals.

The CM also stressed on the role of teachers in developing scientific temper in students at an early age.

Dances and other cultural programs were organized for students as part of the inauguration ceremony, which was also attended by General Education Minister V Sivankutty, Industries Minister P Rajeev and other public representatives.
