A three-storey school building constructed with Indian grant assistance of 11.30 million Nepali rupees was inaugurated on Monday in Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, Nepal.

The Indian Embassy grant under 'Nepal-India Development Cooperation' was used to construct the Shri Mahendra Shanti Secondary School building along with other facilities, the Indian Embassy said in a statement.

It said the project was taken up as a High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) under an agreement between India and Nepal.

Nepali leaders appreciated India's continued developmental support in upliftment of the people of Nepal in priority sectors.

The school – established as a primary school in 1952 and later upgraded as a secondary in 1995 – is one of the oldest schools in the district. The school runs classes from nursery to class 12, with a total student strength of around 800, of which 45 per cent are girls.

As close neighbours, India and Nepal share extensive and multi-sectoral cooperation.

"The implementation of the HICDP reflects the Government of India's continued support in promoting the efforts of the Government of Nepal in upliftment of its people by enhancing infrastructure in priority sectors," the statement said.
