India, July 11, 2024:

• Transformative and first-of-its-kind IoT-enabled solution that empowers rural communities, with a particular focus on uplifting tribal women, through the utilization of renewable energy.

• Distributed energy solution, which is highly efficient and cost-effective, supplying reliable 24/7 power to irrigation pumps, agricultural processing units, homes and other productive uses.• Empowering ~ 100,000 farming families by 2025.

Schneider Electric India Foundation (SEIF), a socially engaged arm of Schneider Electric in India, has inaugurated two climate smart villages in Gumla district, which is a designated aspirational district of Jharkhand, in collaboration with PRADAN (Professional Assistance for Action Developed), a Prominent NGO working to improve the lives of disadvantaged rural families. The Climate Smart Village initiative is designed to empower rural India, with a specific emphasis on improving tribal farming communities with the use of renewable energy.

Access to essentials such as healthcare, education, food security, livelihood opportunities, safety and clean water is crucial for socio-economic development. Energy is essential to allow access to these needs. In rural India, many areas still lack reliable access to electricity as they rely on polluting diesel power, leading to high costs and environmental risks. Even in electrified zones, challenges such as power limitations and unreliable supply hamper essential services. Recognizing these challenges, Schneider Electric has developed an innovative, efficient, reliable and cost-effective “Climate Smart Village Solution”. Schneider Electric, through PRADAN, implemented the solution in two villages in Gumla district of Jharkhand to power productive loads such as irrigation pumps, oil ejectors, rice hullers, groundnut shellers, flour and spice mills and electric rickshaws. This India for India (i4i) system also supplies reliable power to homes, runs street lights and meets other community needs, ensuring 100% capacity utilization by efficiently directing power to various loads.

The Climate Smart Village solution in Sehal and Chatti villages features 40 kW and 45 kW solar panels with innovative IoT-enabled smart energy management systems. This system guarantees 100% capacity utilization of the solar panels by diverting energy to different loads according to demand, benefiting 110 families in the two villages. These improvements have also generated new economic opportunities, such as a doubling of farmers' incomes, reduced migration and a decrease in carbon emissions of 60,000 kg/year.

As part of their livelihood improvement program in 2019, Schneider Electric and PRADAN have already installed over 800 solar irrigation pumps impacting the lives of over 16,000 women farmers. Speaking at the launch, Deepak Sharma, Zonal Chairman, Greater India, MD & CEO, Schneider Electric India, said: “Schneider Electric believes in the crucial role that India's rural development plays in achieving the Viksit Bharat target by 2047. While Significant progress, Great strides have been made to put rural India at the forefront of the country's development path, and to create real impact it is vital to accelerate access to essential services such as healthcare, education, food security, employment opportunities. livelihood, security and drinking water. The development at Sehal and Chatti Village as part of the Climate Smart Village program is a testament to Schneider Electric's dedication to empowering rural communities through renewable energy, promoting a fair and inclusive energy transition and enabling sustainable access to energy. for all".

Saroj Mahapatra, CEO, PRADAN, added, “We are very proud of this collaboration with Schneider Electric India Foundation to inaugurate the 2 climate smart villages in Jharkhand. In these two villages, communities would use solar energy for irrigation, agricultural product processing, homes, and other community needs. The success of our joint initiatives has inspired us to continue this partnership in other states and together we will make rural India more sustainable and empowered.”

The Climate Smart Village initiative empowers rural communities through renewable energy in three key areas: sustainable agriculture, livelihood opportunities and household electricity access. Schneider Electric is committed to continuing its efforts to support and enhance India's rural communities, ensuring that sustainable and innovative energy solutions are developed and implemented that foster growth for all, thereby making a strong contribution to the Viksit Bharat mission of the India.About Schneider Electric
