New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the petition of American citizen Claude David Convis, in which he had sought asylum in India on the grounds that he feared persecution if he returned to his country.

Noting that there are courts in the US and the government there would take care of their apprehensions, a vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta did not accept the plea of Convis, which claimed to find an alternative to petroleum.

Rejecting his plea, the bench said, "We are not here to take care of (you). Your government will take care of it. There are courts in America too."

The US national, who personally appeared before the bench and argued, said that if he left India, he would be "deported".

Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, who was earlier asked to seek instructions from the Center on the issue, told the bench that Convis's visa was scheduled to expire on December 9, 2024.

The bench asked whether the US citizen was facing any kind of prosecution. The answer came negative.

Rejecting the petition, the bench said that the US administration will take care of their issues.
