Ayodhya, Saryu Mahotsav started in Ayodhya on Thursday, in which a large number of devotees reached the ghats of Saryu river to take a dip.

Saryu Jayanti, which celebrates the supposed birth of the river, falls on the full moon day of Jyestha Purnima, 'Jyestha' month as per the Hindu calendar. This year this day will be celebrated on 22nd June.

On Thursday, devotees offered prayers and performed rituals at the ghats.

Om Prakash Pandey, the local priest here, said, "Saryu Jayanti will be celebrated on June 22 on the occasion of Jyeshtha Purnima. Starting from the Saryu Mahotsav, the auspicious time of Saryu Jayanti has been fixed."

The Saryu River is mentioned in various ancient Hindu texts and epics, including the Ramayana. Ayodhya, situated on the banks of Saryu, is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Rama.
