The former aggressive batsman has taken up the role after Chris Silverwood stepped down following their disastrous campaign in the T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a statement that Jayasuriya will hold the post until the completion of Sri Lanka's tour of England in September 2024.

Jayasuriya's first assignment as head coach will be a series of three T20Is and as many ODIs against India starting on July 27. He currently serves as a full-time 'cricket consultant' to Sri Lanka Cricket.

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva said, "With his international cricket experience, Sanath is well placed to guide the national team until we find a permanent solution."

From 1991 to 2007, Jayasuriya played 110 Test matches, scoring 6973 runs at an average of 40.07 with 14 centuries and 31 half-centuries. The left-handed batsman scored 13,430 runs in 445 ODI matches at an average of 32.36, which included 28 centuries and 68 half-centuries. He played a key role in Sri Lanka's 1996 ODI World Cup victory.
