Kendrapara: The carcass of a five-foot long saltwater crocodile was found floating on the Brahmani river in the Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha's Kendrapara district on Wednesday, officials said.

Some local people saw the dead crocodile and informed the forest officials of the park. After receiving the information, a team of forest officials reached the river to retrieve the crocodile's carcass, said Manas Das, assistant conservator of forests (ACF) of the park.

"We have sent the body to the veterinary office for post-mortem. After receiving the post-mortem report, we will find out the exact cause of death of the reptile," he said.

Saltwater crocodiles come under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

According to the reptile census report of January 2024, there are 1,811 saltwater crocodiles in Bhitarkanika National Park.
