Bhubaneswar: The BJP, ridiculed as a 'sign-board party' in Odisha in the 1990s, on Tuesday swept to power in the state, ending BJD leader Naveen Patnaik's 24-year rule.

Proving all political analysts wrong, the Bharatiya Janata Party took a big leap, winning 78 of the 147 assembly seats, defeating the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which failed to win a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections.

The BJD, which has been in power in Odisha since 2000, was virtually stunned by the saffron wave in all areas, including its strongholds in the coastal and southern areas of Odisha.

The BJP, which won only eight Lok Sabha seats last time, is set to secure 20 parliamentary seats in 2024, while the Congress gets one seat.

The Naveen Patnaik-led party, which had won 113 seats in the assembly in the 2019 elections, could secure only 51 seats, followed by Congress with 14 seats, CPI(M) with one seat and independents with three seats. Both BJP and Congress increased their seats in the assembly this time.

While the BJP had only 23 seats in 2019, the Congress had nine members in the assembly.

Even the number of independent candidates in the Odisha Assembly has increased to three this time.

CPI(M) maintained its status quo by winning its only seat in Bonai in Sundergarh district.

This will be the first BJP government in the political history of Odisha. Although the BJP was in alliance with the BJD and formed the government from 2000 to 2009, the alliance broke before the 2009 general elections.

The BJP is contesting the elections against the BJD and has failed to make any notable performance till 2024.Even before the 2024 elections, an attempt was made to share seats between the BJD and the BJP, which incidentally failed.

This time too, BJP campaigned vigorously in Odisha and Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself, apart from addressing 10 election rallies, held two road shows in Bhubaneswar and Puri.

BJP state vice president Golak Mohapatra said, “BJP central leaders have held at least 245 election meetings across the state.”

The 2024 election in Odisha is unique because it was fought on the issue of Oriya "asmita" (pride).

Political analyst Braj Kishore Mishra said, "This is probably the first election in the history of Indian politics where state pride against the ruling government (of a regional party) was the main election issue.,

While political analysts were busy analyzing the election results, party insiders pointed out that BJD's campaign was very weak in the face of BJP's high-profile election campaign.

Apart from Modi, top BJP leaders like Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Smriti Irani, Hema Malini and many others campaigned for their party candidates, while BJD campaigned for only two individuals- Patnaik and his close aide VK Pandian. ,

The issue of the "missing keys" of the Ratna Bhandar (treasury) of Lord Jagannath was raised and the BJP alleged that Patnaik was "outsourcing" the government and the party.

In the final stages of the election campaign, BJP national vice president Baijayant Panda alleged that voting for BJD meant empowering Pandian, a bureaucrat-turned-politician whom the opposition accused of trying to trick the "sick" Patnaik. Was.

Questions were also raised over the Chief Minister's health as he was seen unable to lift his microphone to address the public during the election campaign.Prime Minister Modi made Patnaik's health a big issue and even said that there could be a conspiracy behind the "sudden decline" in his condition.

BJD, on the other hand, focused on informing voters about various welfare schemes launched by the Patnaik government.

Political analysts said that key issues such as "price rise", alleged "neglect" of Odisha and unemployment could not be raised properly against the BJP-led central government, leading to the BJD's defeat.
