Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday claimed that the state government's 'Safe Drive Save Life' program has helped a lot in reducing the number of road accidents.

On the eighth anniversary of 'Safe Drive Save Life Day', Banerjee urged people to give more importance to road safety to prevent accidents on the roads.

Banerjee posted on "

He said, "Our concerted campaigns and exercises have significantly reduced the number of road accidents and deaths, however the campaign continues with gusto. Keep safety paramount on our roads!"

However, Banerjee did not cite any numbers to support her claim of reduction in the number of road accidents in West Bengal.

"We have to give more importance to road safety, and especially to prevent accidents on the roads. Safe Drive Save Life has been conceptualized to save lives," he said.

The 'Safe Drive Save Life Day' initiative was launched across the state on 8 July 2016, primarily to create awareness on road safety and make people understand the importance of safe driving.
