MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his official residence in Novo-Ogaryovo for a "personal engagement" on Monday evening.

"Meeting of two close friends and trusted partners," a Foreign Ministry spokesperson posted on Twitter.

Sharing some pictures of the meeting, it said, "Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his official residence in Novo-Ogaryovo for a private programme."

It said that this is an opportunity for both the leaders to cherish and celebrate India-Russia friendship.

In his first visit since the start of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, Prime Minister Modi traveled to Russia on Monday to hold summit talks with President Putin on Tuesday – a visit that was seen in the broader geopolitical context and signals being seen.

Soon after landing in Moscow, Modi said he was looking forward to deepening bilateral partnership in future areas and that stronger ties between India and Russia would "greatly benefit our people".

India wants to play a "supportive role" for a peaceful and stable region, the Prime Minister said in his departure statement.

Modi was welcomed by Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov at Vnukovo-II airport. Officials said the Russian First Deputy Minister also accompanied the Indian Prime Minister from the airport to his hotel.
