Modern Kinjal missiles are feared because they are difficult to intercept with current defense systems due to their high speed and explosive power.

Several explosions were heard early Friday in the western Ukrainian region of Khmelnytsky, public broadcaster Saspilne reported, citing residents.

The region is home to a major Ukrainian airbase near the city of Starokostyniv, which is expected to host Western F-16 fighter jets supplied by Ukraine's allies.

As Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on Telegram, explosions were also reported near the capital Kiev, which were attributed to air defense operations.

Earlier in the night, Russia launched a joint air strike on Ukraine using cruise missiles, rockets and combat drones.The Ukrainian Air Force said at least two Kinzhal missiles were used in the attack.

Near Kiev, firefighters continued efforts to extinguish a blaze at an industrial plant that had been smoldering since Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine launched a major attack with more than 80 drones on Russian border areas early Friday.

It said 70 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were intercepted in the Rostov region alone.

Belgorod, Volgograd, Voronezh and Kursk regions, as well as the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014 in violation of international law, were also affected.The information could not be independently verified.

Rostov region governor Vasily Golubev reported power outages in several villages.

According to preliminary findings, there were no deaths or injuries.

Officials said an oil depot suffered minor damage from falling debris in the Voronezh region. However, no one was injured there either.
