The ban, which will run from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2026, marks the first time the extension has been extended by more than a year, Xinhua news agency reported.

Originally enacted in August 2014 in retaliation for Western sanctions over the Russia–Ukraine conflict, the embargo affects products from the US, EU, Australia, Norway and Canada. The sanctions were later extended to other European countries, including Ukraine.

Putin is reported to have praised the import ban for accelerating Russia's agricultural growth.
