New Delhi, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday remembered Queen Ahilyabai Holka on her 300th birth anniversary and said she was an ideal ruler who provided good governance and worked for the welfare of every section of the society.

In a video statement, Bhagwat said that despite being a lesbian, she lived a simple life and looked after the weak and the backward.

He said, "This year is the centenary of Punyashloka Devi Ahilyabai Holkar." He said that the title of 'Punyashloka' is given to those rulers who free their subjects from all kinds of privations and sorrows.

"She was a widow. Despite being a single woman, she not only took over her empire but also made it big and provided good governance," the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief said.,

In fact, she was one of the ideal rulers of her time, adding that she epitomized the capabilities of women.

Bhagwat said that Holkar built industries so that his subjects could find employment, "He built them (industries) so well that the textile industry of Maheshwar is still running today. It provides employment to many people, " They said.

The RSS chief said Holkar cared for the weaker and backward classes and also simplified the tax system. “He cared about farmers,” he said.His kingdom was a good kingdom in every way.

He said, “Today we talk about women empowerment. Goddess Ahilyabai has set a perfect example for you to emulate. Despite being a queen, she led a simple life. Bhagwat said that the work he did was special in many ways.He ran the state efficiently and had friendly relations with all the rulers of that time, he said. She was known for her strategies that prevented attacks on her kingdom.

At the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha held in Nagpur in March, the RSS had announced that it would organize events to commemorate the 300th birth anniversary of Holkar.

Bhagwat said, "Efforts will be made everywhere to remember him throughout this year. It is a matter of great joy.I wish you all the best for such an endeavour."
