Shillong, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Preston Tynsong on Thursday said the Center has sanctioned Rs 24,000 crore for the construction of a four-lane road from Umiam to Silchar via East Jaintia Hills district to improve road connectivity to Assam, Mizoram and Tripura. Have done.

He said that out of the total amount sanctioned, Rs 12,000 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of a 100 km long road between Umiam and Malidore (both in Meghalaya).

This amount also includes compensation for land owners.

“This project will help ease travel to Silchar, Mizoram and Tripura while connecting Guwahati in Assam,” Tynsong said in an interview.

The remaining Rs 12,000 crore is earmarked for the construction of the remaining 4-lane road in the neighboring state of Assam.

The proposed 4-lane road will replace the existing National Highway-6 which is in poor condition in various parts in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

Tynsong also said Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had on June 24 sanctioned Rs 290 crore for the repair and improvement of NH-6 from Lamsnong to Malidor in East Jaintia Hills district.

The condition of NH-6 is poor and people traveling to and from Assam, Mizoram and Tripura have been affected after heavy rains due to monsoon in Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, newly elected Shillong MP Dr Ricky Singkon also met Gadkari for the repair of NH-6.
