Mumbai: Politics overshadowed cricket in the Maharashtra Legislature on Friday as Rohit Sharma and other members of the city's T20 World Cup-winning team were honored at the Vidhan Bhavan.

When Suryakumar Yadav, who took an incredible match-defining catch in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa, stood up to speak, everyone in the Central Hall, including ministers and MLAs, shouted in unison for him to speak on the catch.

Suryakumar said in Marathi, “Catch basla hatat (The catch has just come into my hands)” and the audience applauded loudly. Then he started giving a kind of replay by gesturing with his hands as to how he took the catch.

Team captain Rohit Sharma, who spoke after Suryakumar, said, “Surya just said that the ball was in his hands.” It was good that the ball was in his hands otherwise I would have dropped him from the team.

“It was a dream to bring the World Cup back to India,” Rohit said in his Marathi speech. We waited 11 years for this. We won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.

“I am very grateful to my teammates, not just Shivam Dubey, Surya and Yashasvi Jaiswal but everyone who contributed to India's success. I was lucky to have such a team. Everyone was determined in their efforts. When the opportunity came, everyone stepped up."

Earlier on Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde honored Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shivam Dubey and Suryakumar Yadav at his official residence Varsha.
