New Delhi [India], Tennis stars Rohan Bopanna and Sumit Nagal have secured Paris Olympics 2024 quotas for India through the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings in the doubles and singles competition respectively.

The qualification window for the Paris Olympics for tennis ended on Monday and world number four Bopanna, who has been deep in the top 10 of the doubles competition since November last year, comfortably secured his quota.

Nagal had also secured the quota by jumping 18 places in the singles rankings last week. After winning the ATP Challenger title at the Heilbronn Neckar Cup in Germany on Sunday, Nagal moved up from No. 95 to a career-best No. 77, according to Olympics.com.

The men's and women's singles competitions at Paris 2024 will each feature 64 players.According to the ATP rankings released on June 10, the top 56 players in the men's singles competition received their quota. Each country can reserve a maximum of four quotas.

If no French player managed to secure a direct spot at the Olympics through the rankings, France, as the host nation, had a quota place reserved. But since France secured all four men's singles quotas through its ranking, the host nation's quota was added back to the pool and the cut-off moved from 56 to 57 players.

Nagal finished last among the players eligible for the quota through rankings and secured his place.Nagal, who played for India at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, was ranked 138th in the rankings in January. Earlier this year, he broke into the ATP top 100 with his title win at the Chennai Open.

For Olympic tennis, National Olympic Committees (NOCs) around the world must provide confirmation of quota utilization by 19 July. They have the exclusive right to represent their country in multi-sport events and the participation of athletes in the Games. It will depend on how they select the athletes to represent the country's flag at the Olympics.Meanwhile, the doubles event will feature 32 teams with two teams from each country in the men's and women's competition. The first players to qualify for the event were the top 10 players in the doubles ranking, as long as they had a partner available in the top 300 of the doubles competition.

Bopanna is expected to choose world number 67 Sriram Balaji as his partner for the Olympics as the NOC has confirmed the quota.

Bopanna, 44, won the Australian Open Grand Slam in January and reached the semi-finals of the French Open last week. Bopanna represented India at the London 2012 Games and Rio 2016 but missed qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
