New York, Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. is set to make his Broadway debut with Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar's new play "McNeil".

Downey Jr., who recently won his first Oscar trophy for Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer', will play the lead writer in the play, which is being staged by Broadway's giant Lincoln Center Theater at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre.

Directed by Bartlett Sher, "McNeil" is described as "a shocking and wickedly smart examination of the inevitable humanity – and increasing inhumanity – of the stories we tell," according to a press release from Lincoln Center Theatre.

"Good writers borrow, great writers steal. Jacob MacNeil (Downey Jr.) is a great writer, one of our greatest writers, a perennial candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. But MacNeil has a different son is also a new novel, featuring old ax grins and an unhealthy fascination with artificial intelligence,” the official synopsis reads.

Downey Jr. will also produce the stage show through his banner Team Downey in collaboration with Lincoln Center Theatre.

"McNeil" will begin previews on September 5, and run a strictly limited schedule from September 30 to November 24.

Downey Jr., who is also known globally for playing the superhero Iron Man in several Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, is currently starring in the HBO miniseries "The Sympathizer", from writer Viet Thanh Nguyen's corresponding series. It is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the title.
