Shillong (Meghalaya) [India], Meghalaya's first woman Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang said that there has been an increase in crimes against women and children in the state, which is a matter of concern.

A conference was held at Meghalaya Police Headquarters under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday to discuss the matter.

Speaking to reporters after the conference, newly appointed DGP Nongrang said that one of the main agendas of the conference was to discuss crimes against women and children which are increasing in the state and are a matter of concern.

Nongrang said chargesheets were filed in 65 per cent of cases in 2023, with crimes especially against women and children accounting for 32 per cent of the total crimes, which is a matter of concern.

In this, measures to deal with various challenges faced by the police department were discussed. Also on the question of increasing cyber crime, Nongrang said that this was one of the major agendas of the conference which was discussed.

He said, "We are keeping an eye on cyber crime, which is a big challenge and to deal with it, we have also proposed to the government to create a cyber wing."

He said, "The good thing is that the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister have given us the go ahead and they have assured us that this is one of the things that we will focus on and ensure that it comes into existence soon. Returns." ,

Reacting to the implementation of the three new criminal laws across India, Nongrang said that they have already conducted several training sessions for the implementation of the new laws.

The official said, "We have discussed several times with the Home Ministry and other states as to what are the best practices to move forward. There are many aspects to this. Yesterday, we had a panel discussion on this and discussed various aspects of it. " ,
