New Delhi: According to government data released on Friday, retail inflation increased to 5.08 percent in June due to costlier kitchen items.

Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation stood at 4.8 per cent in May 2024 and 4.87 per cent in June 2023 (previous low).

According to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), inflation in the food basket stood at 9.36 per cent in June, down from 8.69 per cent in May.

The government has tasked the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to ensure that CPI inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side.

RBI has estimated CPI inflation at 4.5 per cent for 2024-25, 4.9 per cent in Q1, 3.8 per cent in Q2, 4.6 per cent in Q3 and 4.5 per cent in Q4.

The central bank mainly takes into account retail inflation while deciding its bi-monthly monetary policy.
