The film presents a fictional version of the beginnings of the Dyer Cooperative Movement which, inspired by Verghese Kurien, the father of the White Revolution, made India the world's largest milk producer.

The film is India's first crowdfunded film, produced by 500,000 dairy farmers who contributed Rs 2 each to its production.

The film's director Shyam Benegal said in a statement, "I am delighted to hear about the tremendous response that the revival of 'Manthan' has received during its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. But I am even more happy that the restored film will be released in theaters across the country. 'Manthan will be the first restoration of any of my films, which will be released in theatres.,

“When 'Manthan' was released in 1976, it was a huge success as farmers traveled in bullock carts from small towns and villages in large numbers to watch the film. I am hopeful that when the restored film returns to the big screens this June after 48 years, people from across India will flock to theaters to watch the film."

For the screening of the restored version, the Film Heritage Foundation and Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited have collaborated with PVR-INOX Limited and Cinepolis India.

The film will be re-released in 50 Indian cities on June 1 and June 2.

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah said in a statement, “Watching the restored 'Manthan' during its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival was a very emotional experience for me.I was overwhelmed with memories of almost 50 years ago when cinema was a medium of change, and I was brought to tears by the standing ovation at the end, which just wasn't for me. But for the film that has stood the test of time and also for the beauty of the restoration."

“I am glad that this film will be releasing in theaters across India and hope that people do not miss the opportunity to see a beautiful restoration of a historical film on the big screen. I will go to the theater myself to watch the movie again."
