Kolkata: Severe cyclonic storm 'Remal' after making landfall around midnight on Sunday, Monda weakened into a cyclonic storm in the morning, with winds reaching speeds of 80-90 kilometers per hour, the weather department said.

It said the weather system, which was located about 150 km northeast of Sagar Island at 5.30 am, caused torrential rains overnight in the coastal districts of Kolkata and West Bengal.

It is likely to move north-east and weaken further, the department said in the bulletin.

It said that 146 mm rainfall was recorded in Kolkata between 8.30 am on Sunday and 5.30 am on Monday.

The maximum wind speed recorded in the metropolis was 74 km per hour, while the maximum wind speed recorded in Dum Dum on the northern outskirts of the city was 91 km per hour, the weather office said.Other places in south Bengal that received heavy rainfall during this period are Haldia (110 mm), Tamluk (70 mm) and Nimpith (70 mm).

Meteorologists have predicted more rain in Kolkata and the southern district including Nadia and Murshidabad, with one or two intense spells of rain with strong surface winds till Tuesday morning.

A day after Cyclone Remal passed through the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal at a speed of 135 kmph, scenes of widespread devastation were evident in the coastal areas of West Bengal, with widespread damage to infrastructure and property.

The cyclone lashed the state and adjacent coasts of Bangladesh between Saga Island and Khepupara, near south-west of Mongla in the neighboring country, after making landfall at 8.30 pm on Sunday, officials said.

Efforts to restore normalcy are underway, with emergency services working to clear debris and restore power to affected areas.He said the cyclone has caused significant disruption in air, rail and ROA transport in Kolkata and other parts of South Bengal.

Several suburban trains were canceled in the Sealdah South section of the Easter Railway (ER) due to the cyclone.

Train services in this section resumed at 9 am, an ER official said.

Kolkata airport suspended flight operations for 21 hours from Sunday afternoon, affecting 394 flights, both international and domestic.
