The meeting, held at the Iranian Foreign Ministry's Institute of Political and International Studies on Saturday, was attended by special representatives of Iran, China, Russia and Pakistan, official news agency IRNA reported.

In a message sent to the meeting, Iranian acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani said the US should release Afghan assets that were previously seized, Xinhua news agency reported.

He said that almost three years have passed since the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, the country is still struggling to solve outstanding problems in the economy and development.

Bagheri Kani said that although Afghanistan's caretaker government has managed to make achievements in addressing some challenges, the freezing of the country's assets has hindered the post-war recovery.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting in Tehran, Iranian Presidential Special Envoy on Afghanistan Affairs Hassan Kazemi Qomi said the participants highlighted the need to resolve Afghanistan's issues through regional dialogue and cooperation.

He said addressing issues such as fighting terrorism and improving humanitarian conditions depend on regional cooperation.

Kazemi Koomi said other issues discussed during the meeting included ensuring the security of common borders and issues regarding Afghan refugees.

He said the US, which "has faced failure after 20 years of occupation of Afghanistan", should be held responsible for the country's current problems.

US forces pulled out of Afghanistan in August 2021 after occupying the country for 20 years after waging a war against it in 2001 under the pretext of fighting terrorism.
