New Delhi, Rajya Sabha member John Brittas on Wednesday raised concerns about the increase in tariff for the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and sought the intervention of the Civil Aviation Ministry to review the amendments.

The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has approved revision of tariffs for airports including higher user development fee (UDF) and landing charges.

The revised tariffs will be effective from July 1 for the airport, which is managed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd.

In a letter to Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, Britas has expressed serious concern over the "recent heavy duty revision" at the airport in the Kerala capital.

He has urged the Minister to direct the concerned authorities to take immediate steps to review these astronomical tariff revisions so that the interests of passengers and the airport are protected from undue financial stress.

According to him, the substantial increase in UDF and other charges will put a huge burden on passengers and airlines, potentially reducing the accessibility and affordability of air travel for citizens of southern Kerala and beyond.

Furthermore, Britas claimed that the airport operator wants to extract maximum revenue from passengers by significantly increasing UDF and other charges as well as reducing non-operational revenue, which would otherwise help cross-subsidize passenger fares.

"Such dishonest business practices must be addressed immediately to protect the interests of passengers," he said in the letter.
