Jaipur: Eight policemen, including an SHO, have been booked for allegedly beating a rape accused to death in Jhunjhunu district, officials said on Monday.

He said that the incident took place on May 29 within the limits of Mandrela police station, after which the SHO has been suspended.

Kotputli resident Gaurav Sharma was arrested from Jaipur on May 24 in the rape case registered at Mandrela police station. Officials said that the next day the court handed over the accused to the police on five-day remand.

On May 29, the 30-year-old accused was taken to hospital after his health deteriorated while in police custody. He told that the doctors in the hospital declared him dead.

Additional Superintendent of Police Pushpendra Singh Rathod said on Monday that the family members of the deceased have refused to accept the body and demanded that a case of murder be registered against the SHO and other policemen involved.

Following a meeting of top police and administration officials with the family late on Sunday night, a case of murder was registered against eight police officers, including SHO Ravindra Kumar, Rathore said, adding that the SHO has been suspended.

The official said that the body was kept in the mortuary after his death, which has been handed over to the family after postmortem and the police is investigating the matter.
