Nagar said, "The state's hands are tied due to the agreement that the Gehlot government had signed to meet the demand of electricity in the state during the Rabi season."

“Now we will have to return the borrowed power to other states,” the minister said.

The previous Ashok Gehlot-led government had signed about 34,80 lakh units of power agreements with other states to meet the power demand in Rajasthan during the Rabi season. The state received the power units from October 2023 to February 2024.

"Now, despite facing a power crisis, the state energy department is returning 200 to 225 lakh units of power to other states every day. This is almost per cent of the daily power demand in the state due to demand-supply imbalance." An official said on Friday that these units are being shifted to other states.

Meanwhile, Nagar said the agreement was made in such a way that "we are not bound to return the borrowed power in the peak season."

According to the agreement, Rajasthan will have to return the borrowed power units every month from March to September.

Due to the scorching heat in the state, the demand for electricity increases in the months of April, May and June. “But the department will have to restore power even in this peak season,” said an official.

Out of the total 34,800 lakh units of electricity, the department will not return 21,536 lakh units of electricity to other states in the next four months.
