Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday defended Rahul Gandhi, whose speech in the Lok Sabha targeting the BJP has sparked a controversy, saying the Congress leader did not insult Hindutva.

Thackeray said the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha did not utter a single word against Hindutva during his speech in Parliament.

"I have heard Rahul Gandhi's speech. None of us will insult Hindutva and we will not tolerate it. This includes Rahul ji. Rahul ji said that BJP is not Hindutva. I have said very clearly that I have left BJP, not Hindutva." Told reporters here.

He said, "He (Gandhi) was trying to show the picture of Lord Shiva, but that too was banned. Is this Hindutva? I don't think Rahul ji has insulted Hindutva. Our Hindutva is sacred." "

In his first speech as leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the BJP and accused the ruling party leaders of dividing people on communal lines. Some of the comments he made during a discussion were later deleted.
