New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the BJP-led government of pushing Manipur into a "civil war" due to its policies and politics.

The Congress leader also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting the state since the outbreak of caste violence.

Initiating the debate from the opposition in the Lok Sabha on the motion of thanks on the President's address, Gandhi alleged that the government was behaving as if nothing had happened in Manipur.

He said, "You have plunged Manipur into civil war. Manipur has been burnt by you, your policies and your politics."

The Congress leader said that it seems as if Manipur is not a state of India. "For the Prime Minister, Manipur is not a state. We requested the Prime Minister to go there, to give a message. But no. You cannot get a response (from the Prime Minister)," he said.

Gandhi also mentioned the plight of women in the north-eastern state. Responding to a comment by the ruling party, he said, "You do not include women in your organization, but I can speak about them."

Manipur has been on the boil since May last year as caste violence broke out in the state following a march organized by Kuki tribals in the hill districts to protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the valley-dominant Meitei community.
