He virtually flagged off the first consignment of litchi exported by the Department of Horticulture in collaboration with Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

He said that litchi is cultivated in 3,250 hectares in Punjab, whose production is about 13,000 metric tonnes.

“Due to the favorable climate in Pathankot, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur districts, the naturally deep red color and sweetness of the litchi produced is better than that of other states.”

Jauramajra said that with the initiative of the state government, litchi producers will be able to earn more profits through export.

The Horticulture Minister said, "In the coming days, efforts will be made to export other horticulture crops also with the help of the Horticulture Department and APEDA."

He said that the litchi produce of progressive farmer Rakesh Dadwal of Muradpur village of Pathankot has been sent from Amritsar for export to Britain.

He said, "The day is not far when the fruits of Punjab will put the state's name on the map in important foreign markets and litchi growers will get international recognition."
