Amritsar (Punjab) [India], in a major development, Punjab police busted a cross-border narcotics smuggling ring and arrested a drug trafficker with 5 kg of heroin, an official said here on Tuesday.

The accused was identified as Lakhwinder Singh alias Lakha of Khemkaran.

According to Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab Gaurav Yadav, "Amid the ongoing war on drugs waged on the instructions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Amritsar Commissionerate Police dismantled a cross-border narcotics smuggling network with the arrest of a drug dealer after recovering 5 kg of heroin from his possession."

Apart from recovering the heroin consignment, the police also seized the Splendor motorcycle on which the accused was travelling, the official said.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said the accused Lakhwinder Lakha was in direct contact with a Pakistan-based drug trafficker identified as Ali and had been involved in drug trafficking. Drones were being used to transport drug shipments from Pakistan, he added.

The DGP said the videography of the entire search and seizure process was carried out in the presence of a registered officer as per the provisions of the new criminal laws. Investigations are being carried out to establish backward and forward links in this case.

Sharing details of the operation, Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Ranjit Singh Dhillon said police teams had obtained reliable information that drug peddler Lakhwinder Lakha had recovered the drug consignment and was on his way from Khemkaran to deliver it. to Amritsar.

He said acting quickly on information, police teams of CIA-2 under the overall supervision of ADCP CITY-2 Abhimanyu Rana laid a trap and successfully arrested the accused from Khemkaran area. More investigations are underway, he added.

In this regard, a case FIR No. 130 dated June 1, 2024 under sections 21C, 23 and 25 of the NDPS Act was registered at Islamabad Police Station in Amritsar.
