CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government will make efforts to export litchi grown in Pathankot to increase the income of farmers, state Horticulture Minister Chetan Singh Jauramajra said on Thursday.

He was addressing the state level litchi exhibition in Pathankot.

The minister said Pathankot district produces the best quality litchi in Punjab and contributes 60 per cent to the litchi production of the state.

He said, “With the aim of increasing the awareness of farmers about litchi production, the Punjab government will endeavor to ensure that litchi from Pathankot district reaches international markets. For this purpose, the first consignment of litchi will soon be exported to foreign countries."

Jauramajra also said that the underground water level is falling rapidly, and the only solution to stop it is to encourage farmers to shift from paddy and wheat cultivation to horticultural crops.

He said that Pathankot district is ideal for litchi cultivation and special efforts are being made to increase profitability for litchi farmers by increasing production and sales.

The minister also announced that the first consignment of litchi will be exported soon, which will help farmers and growers in Pathankot earn more profits from their crop.

Jauramajra said about 3,900 hectares of area in Punjab is dedicated to litchi cultivation, of which Pathankot has about 2,200 hectares.

To promote litchi cultivation, Litchi Estate has been established in Sujanpur, Pathankot.
