Ludhiana (Punjab): A group of farmers on Sunday protested against the recent toll fee hike at the Ladhowal Toll Plaza in Ludhiana, Punjab, and pressured the authorities not to charge commuters.

The protest was led by Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Union and Bharatiya Kisan Union.

Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Jagdish Singh said that the fee at Ladhowal toll plaza is the highest in the state.

He claimed that toll authorities increased the fee thrice in a year and said the increase would put additional financial burden on people.

Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Union leader Dilbag Singh said that this is the only toll plaza in the state where the fee has increased thrice in a year.

"When someone buys a new vehicle, he pays many other taxes along with road tax. Then why should people pay toll tax?" He asked.

The protesters demanded withdrawal of the toll fee increase. Police were deployed at the spot to control the crowd.

Charges at toll plazas were increased in April.
