Chandigarh, Punjab Excise and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Wednesday stressed on creating a strong framework for monitoring and regulation of interstate movement of methanol to prevent any toxic liquor tragedy.

He asked officials of his department to formulate a strong enforcement mechanism in consultation with the Central Government to monitor the sale and movement of methanol, especially to regulate online sale of the chemical. Methanol is used in industrial products.

“This initiative is important in preventing the use of methanol for producing illicit liquor, which can lead to tragedies like liquor poisoning,” Cheema said in an official statement.

Giving details of the enforcement activities of the department during April and May 2024, Additional Chief Secretary-cum-Financial Commissioner (Taxation) Vikas Pratap Singh informed the Minister that 14,011 liters of illicit liquor and 3,450 liters of extra neutral alcohol (ENA) were seized. Went. ,

Besides, 16,79,907 liters of 'Lahan' (raw material used to make illicit liquor) was seized, Singh said.

He said that excise officials are carrying out intensive operations against liquor smuggling, ENA and other excise related crimes.
