New Delhi [India], Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday declared Mohinder Bhagat as the party candidate for the by-election on Jalandhar West assembly seat.

The by-elections for the constituency are scheduled to be held on July 10 and the results will be declared on July 13.

This seat had become vacant after the resignation of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Sheetal Angural. Angural had resigned on March 28. He has been declared the BJP candidate from the same seat.

Angural had quit the post of AAP MLA after joining the BJP along with former AAP MP Sushil Kumar Rinku in March.

With Angural's resignation, AAP's number of elected MLAs dropped from 92 to 91 it won in the 117-member assembly in the assembly elections held in February 2022.

In the recently held Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi won the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat by a record margin of 1.75 lakh votes by defeating BJP's Sushil Kumar Rinku.

In the Lok Sabha elections, AAP won only 3 out of 13 seats in Punjab, while Congress won seven seats. Shiromani Akali Dal won one seat and two seats were won by independent candidates.
