A total of 464 farmers from Puducherry and Karaikal regions of the Union Territory are awaiting compensation claims under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).

Puducherry Farmers Union leader V. Chandrasekhar told media persons that an inter-ministerial team led by Rajiv Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has assessed the damage.

He said compensation claims are to be settled on the basis of yield data from harvesting experiments and it is mandatory for the insurance company to settle 90 per cent of claims for all Kharif and Rabi-II crops within three weeks of receipt. yield data.

The farmer leader said that despite several representations, the director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, who is the state nodal officer for the scheme, did not give the go-ahead to the National Insurance Company, whose contract was till March 31, 2023.

However, the Additional Director (Agronomy) and an official of the Scheme Implementation Department told IANS that the insurance intermediaries appointed by the company failed to enroll 464 farmers in the National Crop Insurance Portal out of over 8,000 applicants.

The official said discrepancies in names in identity documents and bank and IFSC codes are the reason behind this. The ministry has reopened the portal after contacting the agriculture department, but the insurance company has not yet completed the process, hence the delay.

He said that the matter is being taken up with the Central Government to remove the discrepancies. The official also said that claims worth Rs 7.6 crore of over 8,000 farmers in the Union Territory were settled through Direct Benefit Transfer about 10 months ago.
